HET Beginning-Trimester Report
  Third Period of 2020
August 1 - November 30

This report is primarily to give updates to PIs on recent changes/improvements and to summarize the determination of time allocations for the 20-3 trimester.

Updates on recent changes/improvements:

Phase II TSL Keyword Updates

We've removed a few default options in order that users are specific about their requirements, added wavelength-dependencies to target & sky brightness values, added a few changes to help with HPF observations (all HPF targets must have SNGOAL and RVHIGHPREC), and a few other small changes.

These changes are now in effect, so any 20-3 target submissions should be consistently processed with the updated TSL parser. This may require some edits to your "usual" TSL files. The TSL documentation provided on Hydra has been updated to include all of these changes:
   TSL keywords table: https://hydra.as.utexas.edu/?a=help&h=79
   TSL descriptions: https://hydra.as.utexas.edu/?a=help&h=80
   TSL examples: https://hydra.as.utexas.edu/?a=help&h=76

The following keywords are required and do not have default values:

-all instruments require a wavelength-dependent magnitude for target:
VIRUS:  GMAG, SDSS g filter   (can be nominal like 25.0, e.g. for surveys)
    LRS2-B: GMAG, SDSS g filter
    LRS2-R: RMAG, SDSS r filter
    HPF:    JMAG, near-infrared J-filter
IMAG is requested, but not required (SDSS i filter)

-all instruments require a wavelength-dependent sky surface brightness limit:
VIRUS:  SKYBRIGHT_G (in SDSS g filter)
    LRS2-B: SKYBRIGHT_G
    LRS2-R: SKYBRIGHT_R (in SDSS r filter)
HPF:    SKYBRIGHT_I (in SDSS i filter)
These values should be between 14-23 mag/arcsec2.
These requirements are verified with the guider cameras during observation.
Our sky-brightness model is monochromatic in V, and we will adopt fixed colors
to convert to g/r/i sky brightness.

-all instruments require SEEING keyword, no default value
(assumed to be in same wavelengths as SKYBRIGHT, for guide stars)

-all instruments require SETUPMETHOD, no default value

 -all HPF targets require SNGOAL
This is defined consistently with the HPF exposure time calculator and
refers to the SNR per 1D extracted pixel by Goldilocks in the 19th order
(order=18 when counting up from 0)

-RVHIGHPREC Y/N   required for all HPF targets
Request for highest achievable RV precision:
     -requires LFC working normally
-requires all systems stable for 24+ hours

New keywords we have added which are optional to use:

-EXTRACALS option for LFC on HPF:
1xcalLFCadj = take 1x LFC before OR after observation
2xcalLFCadj = take 1x LFC before AND after observation

 -OCD
Y or N - whether or not these targets should be observed with OCD
following the usual HETDEX approach (VIRUS-only)

I hope these help improve the scientific output of these observations. I know some of your old TSL files will need to be updated if you were not specifying some of these values in the past. But I think this investment of time will be worthwhile to better connect the Phase II requests with what we see here at the telescope while observing these targets. Let me know if you have questions about your target submissions, or other suggestions for improvements.

Commissioning, Engineering, and Guaranteed Time allocations

The HET Board granted the following allocations for the 20-3 period:

In total the Board granted 267 hours of Comm/Eng/GTO time in 20-3.  (252h on-sky and 15h for HET operations)

Note that TACs may allocate up to 8.3% at P0, 25% at P1, 33.3% at P2 and 33.3% at P3; P4 allocations are not restricted. Priorities of Com/Eng/GTO time are assigned by the HET Board and not from this formula.

Also note that the PSU and UT TACs have sometimes elected not to allocate a small amount of time which can be allocated to targets-of-opportunity which arise later in the trimester.
