Decided that a hard reboot of jove was the only solution, and after pushing the power button once I got control back. The system shutdown options window opened, and I was able to close it and use the desktop environment normally.
Two programs were not running correctly afterward: the rdesktop application (frozen, glitched graphics) and a terminal which, even after clicking in the terminal window and hovering the mouse over it, was nonresponsive. (Verbose system commands were still scrolling by; killed all of the systems in another terminal.) | Hitting the power button on Jove once seemed to unlock everything. |
